| What is your love language?

Acho que todas! hahahaha
I think all of them! hahaha

I don't know how to answer this question, so I will speak about each language, ok?

Brazilians are very affective, so it is very common for us to kiss on the cheek to say Hi or Good-bye, but this is something that people don't even dream about in other cultures. It's been basically one and a half years since I left Brazil, so this type of touch is a little bit weird for me. But hug is ok. Until January 2013 when I moved to Japan... and then any type of physical touch is strange! Thank goodness, my hubby is very affectionate and he hugs and holds me, otherwise I'd be very 'cold' by now! When I am tired, or sleepy, all I need is his hug! :) So Touch is still my main love language with Jesse, but with other people, I don't know! hahaha

Tempo de Qualidade | Quality Time
This love language is extremely important for me! I am with Jesse 24/7, but sometimes all I want is a moment for only the two of us, without any technology, without books, without distraction! One thing I don't understand here in Japan is to see couples in dates, each one with their iPhone and every once in a while they show something to the other person. Weird, huh? I like to date old fashioned way! :P

Palavras de Afirmação | Words of Affirmation
This love language is more important if I don't know the person very well! After all, sometimes we need to affirm with all the letters what we feel! With the people who are closer to me, this is a love language that I need the most when I'm kinda blue.

Presentes | Gifts
Who doesn't like to receive gifts? Sometimes a gift means more than what was given, sometimes the intention touches more than the gift itself. A good example is what I received today, I was so touched that I even posted on my Instagram, check it out.

Atos de Serviço | Acts of Service
This is the same thing as Words of Affirmation and Gifts, the saddest or tired I am, the more I need it (and appreciate it!). In fact, the acts of service weren't something that made me feel loved or anything, but since I have my own house and I am tired enough that I don't want to do anything, I've been feeling loved when Jesse makes me tea or when he does the dishes :P

In the end, I concluded that my love languages are still the same: Touch and Quality Time, depending on the day, I need so much love that I accept anything! :P

Dia 26: What popular notion do you think the world has wrong?

The first thing that came to my mind was about sex and dating!

The 'world' believes that we need to test it out to know what we want. It's very common to think that we can date (with anyone) and then decide if you like it or not, it you guys match, and if not, you can just break up and go for the next one. This way, in theory, people would choose a better partner for life. I disagree. I think that if there's one thing that this type of dating make us really ready for is for a divorce. This thing of changing boyfriends every time something bad happens won't help your marriage in anything.

From my own experience! Jesse was the only boyfriend I've even had and seriously, I am so thankful for God for not letting any other relationship happen (even if I prayed asking God for that! hahaha) because sincerely, comparisons would happen and it wouldn't be fun to have a 'shadow' in my relationship with Jesse!

A minha dica: leia a Bíblia.
I also thing that the world doesn't understand Christians, part for ignorance and part because we really aren't giving an example as irresistible as Jesus. My tip: Read the Bible. If you are a Christian: live like Jesus did. If you are not: see the example of Jesus.

Then there's many things that people start to believe wrongly: that it's ok to have sex before marriage, that believers are boring (ok, many of them actually are), that you can't do this, that you can't do that...

Man, if you read about the life of Jesus, he was the most revolutionary man in the history! He destroyed the market at the synagogue, he refused to throw rocks at a woman, he was the one who was against the laws of the society and even spoke to a woman, Jesus was the man that brought the dead to life and a man that even though was God, cried with the death of his friend.

Anyways, I think people understand Jesus wrongly and if that changed... oh, the world would change... a lot better!

Choque Cultural do Contrário | Upside Down Cultural Shock

In one week I will leave Japan and arrive in my own beloved country, Brazil.
And I know that I will suffer cultural shock!

My return to Brazil in 2010 - Pastel, manicure!
A lot is spoken on cultural shock when we arrive in a new country, but what about the cultural shock when we come back to our own country? I've already had the chance to experience that once and man, it is very weird! Many times, that's how we realized how much we have changed!

When I came back from Hawaii, the weirdest thing was to go to the salon to get a manicure and her the women gossiping about the son of the neighbor of the aunt of the grandma... and sincerely, seeing ugly people... hahaha

This time, my shock has already started when I sat pictures of my friends wearing spaguetti strap shirts!! What an indecent thing! hahaha Here in the 'first world' we don't see that hahaha! (guys, it's a joke, but it's serious, my first reaction was to think that there was way too much skin exposed)

- Proteger a bolsa bem!
But anyways, let's talk about my expected cultural shock:
- Protecting my bags really well! Always close the zipper, take care in those matters.
- See people that are not Japanese (I admit that when I see a foreign here I kinda stare at them and try to imagine what the heck they are doing here)
- Not needing to take off my shoes when I arrive in a home (something that I want to keep in my new house)
- Not flushing the toilet paper! Here, we always flush it (not in Brazil, sadly :( ) and THAT's hygienic (in Portuguese we call it 'Hygienic Paper')! Not to mention that the public bathrooms are almost always very clean!
- The service in Japan is very good! I might cry the first time someone treats me badly.

These were the ones I could think about now! Maybe it's better if I make a new list when I arrive in Brasil! :)

Have you even had this type of cultural shock? Tell in the comments a little bit about how it was to come back home!

Dia 25: 5 últimos livros que você leu (ou está lendo) | 5 last books you read (or are reading).

9 days to go to Brazil and things are very crazy here :) we have to make cards, meet people, make a video, see what we will do with our stuff... (oh, the previous post answers the two other things that are on my mind and that were secrets: 1- My new house in Brazil. 2- What do I do with the things in Japan.

Enfim... vamos direto á pergunta de hoje...
Anyways, let's go straight to today's question...
5 últimos livros que você leu (ou está lendo) | 5 last books you read (or are reading).

This is truly a book that is always around! It is the book I read the most (even though I should read more...) and that never gets old. In other words, even if I read from cover to cover, and start reading again, I will always find something new, something that will touch me, a different story will come out. This is awesome! Someday I will post only about this book, that is the basis of my faith and that helps me walk the world and around.

- LOUCO AMOR | CRAZY LOVE - Francis Chan
I've already read this book about 3 times and it's always really good! It makes us put the things on the right place and priority!

- THE DESIGNER BAG AT THE GARBAGE DUMP - Jackie Macgirvin
Olha aqui.
I already wrote about this book. Check it out.

- THE ATONEMENT CHILD - Francine Rivers
Recomendo a todas as mulheres!
Man, what a great book! It's a story of a girl who needs to decide between aborting her baby or not. By the conditions the baby was created, everyone would agree with that decision, but that's not what the Lord teaches us. I recommend to any woman!

- LINGUAGENS DO AMOR Devocional - Gary Chapman (Love Languages Devotional)
Ps. O Jesse o usa para aprender português.
Me and Jesse have been reading this book together since the last year. It's a devotional for couples and it has lots of precious advices. It was a gift from my pastors Bandeira and Val. Ps. Jesse uses it to learn Portuguese.

A história do K. | K.'s Story

Another story to encourage you :) God is not far from the Japanese people and the Japanese people are not too closed to receive Jesus!

As soon as we arrived in Japan, we met K. He has a store in the mall where the church and the English school are. Since March, Jesse has been dedicated to talk to him and explain the gospel to him. He's always been 'open' to hear, but not to receive.

In a certain time, he started making music with Jesse, whom without losing any time, only wanted to play worship and made sure he explained the meaning of all lyrics to K. With the worship, we started seeing a change in him. He also had told us that he was searching for the truth...

Then, when Pastor Mas and Linda came from Canada, they prayed for K, because his brother was in a coma. That day, K. received Jesus and also received a prophetic word that he would pray for his brother and his brother would be healed. And that's what happened. His brother was healed and K. is firm in Jesus.

Now, Jesse and pastor Ohno are doing Bible studies with him. May God continue blessing K and bringing him closer to Jesus and the truth! May K be firm in Jesus and bear many fruit in Japan!

Let's keep praying for more stories like this one to happen in Japan! Pray for the Revival in Japan! Pray for more missionaries! Pray for more of Jesus in this nation!

Língua é uma coisa engraçada! | Language is a funny thing

After meeting with some Brazilian friends, I realized that it is really dangerous to speak Portuguese in Japan and Japanese in Brazil. Why?

Because some words sound really bad in the other language!

But not everything is bad! Today I found out something really interesting between these two languages. We were telling a Japanese friend that the name of my city is Curitiba. She told us that "Chiba" is a Japanese prefecture and Kuri is a type of nut (chestnut). Ok, but the funny thing is that Curitiba has indian origins and it means "land of lots of pinhão (a nut!). And this chestnut has a very similar flavor to pinhão.

Melhor usar a palavra japonesa "Kanpai"
Anyways, I don't even know if it's that interesting, but I thought the coincidence was funny. Now, to add some value to this post, I will give you some hints for the Brazilians wanting to go to Japan.
- Take care when you make a toast. Better to use the Japanese word "Kanpai"
- Take care when calling your dad, depending on the way you say, it might sound like another thing.

- Kagaiake - brilhar
- Tabundane - talvez
- Koko - aqui
- Kudasai - por favor
The other way around is much funnier for us, Brazilians! So, if you see a Japanese guy lost in Brazil, don't misunderstand if he says something funny, ok?
- Kagaiake - shine
- Tabundane - maybe
- Koko - here
- Kudasai - please

Novos passos | New Steps

A closer look into the journey of Jesse and Erika.
written by Jesse Applegate
Well, those newsletters (which you may or may not already be receiving) may be too quick and concise for you, and so now you are here to uncover more details that other people just wanna skip over.

Primeiro, eu vou passar as informações principais.
First off, I will just get to the main info. Originally, the plan was for both of us to go on a one month trip to Brazil starting on the 18th of December, and then return to Japan together to continue our work here. However, plans have changed. Now the plan, Lord-willing, is for Erika to remain in Brazil and for me to come for a final mission from January 22nd till some time in mid-march in order to finish my commitment to these churches. Afterwards, I hope to reunite with Erika in Brazil.

Agora vamos aos detalhes.
Now onto the finer details.

Before coming to Japan, some of you back home asked us if we knew how long. To which we replied, “we do not know how long… it could be a few months, it could be a year; it could be forever.” Which is all we could say, since the Lord did not tell us His will in the matter or give us a specific command with a time frame. None of us even knows what will happen to us tomorrow. Therefore we should say, “if the Lord wills, we will do this or that.”(see James 4:13-17)

In the same way, we have no idea just how long we will be in Brazil in this next chapter of our journey. It could be months, it could be a couple years, who knows. Something unexpected could happen and prevent us from going to Brazil at all, and all of our plans come to nothing. But the Lord has determined our steps and will work out His plan for us.

A quick reflection from the start of our journey here brings me back to some of my first thoughts. As for me… I left the future unknown, but secretly imagined that we would arrive here in Japan and stay long-term, maybe for the rest of our lives.

Before coming to Japan we prayed for months and months, asking the Lord what His will was. We received no clear answer, and Erika’s U.S. tourist Visa was about to expire. The general calling and desire to serve the Lord and fulfill the great commission was strong in our hearts. Previously, Erika and I had felt a strong burden and love for the Japanese people, knowing that the Gospel had barely penetrated Japan yet. With time running short, we looked into several organizations, but were unable to find peace or an open door, except with two choices. YWAM or a local church in Japan. Finally, we felt led that this time we needed to plug directly into the people and culture and so we went the direction of the local church. I asked the Lord to close the doors if it was not His will, and open them if it was His will. Indeed, everything lined up in perfect timing and with God’s speed and favor (not only for us but also for the church). Some of you know one of the challenges we had was processing Erika’s visa for Japan, and though we had a test of faith, God worked in miraculous ways for us. Even after arriving in Japan, when we received our certificate of eligibility we were told that it had been processed in record time.

No entanto, a paixão em nossos corações estava lá e nós comprometemos nossos passos a Deus.
I wrote all of this to point out that from the beginning, the future was uncertain. However, the passion in our hearts was there, and we committed our steps to God. The doors opened and before you knew it we were here.

So what happened between then and now?

Ele respondeu as nossas orações e fez as coisas crescerem.
First of all, God was faithful to us and provided all our needs. He also worked in many ways, both seen and unseen. When we were tired, He was not. When we were sleeping or unaware, He was still working. He answered our prayers and made things grow.

Now I must speak of the difficulties. There have been difficulties for both of us, especially for Erika. From the beginning Erika went through culture shock and many tears. I myself have had my fair share of hardship and moments of depression. In the end the Lord sustained us and gave us hope. Lately though, Erika has been concerned about the condition of her soul, and has become very weary. I told her that I would not force her to stay here, but that it was God’s will for me to be understanding and gentle to her. The first time I said that she prayed and felt led to stay here longer. However, some months later the same thing came up again, and I went to the Lord in prayer.

Ele não me disse pra ir nem pra ficar.
He did not tell me go or stay. However, He reminded me to be understanding and love Erika like Christ loves the church. With this counsel I felt peace, and I told Erika. This time she did not decide to stay, but felt that the right thing for us was to go home for now to Brazil and recover and gain strength. I am also confident that this time will be wonderful for both of us to build up strength and prepare ourselves for the road ahead. Honestly, I think I myself am also ready for a time of recovery after this wearisome “battle.” Therefore I am hopeful and have peace in my heart about all these things, and Erika is also feeling peace.

Furthermore, we hope to also do something for the Lord while in Brazil, whether in the church or in evangelism. We have set our hands to the plow, and we must not look back. I am excited to see what God has in store! May His will alone be done.

We are also looking forward to getting more connected with Erika’s home church (something we have not yet done since having been married). This will be a time of strengthening our spiritual bond with our fellowship of believers in Brazil.

Lastly, Japan is still on my heart. I hope to continue praying and Lord-willing come back again in the future to participate in furthering the Gospel here, whether short or long-term. Maybe we can also encourage others to join the work in Japan, because the Harvest is great but the workers are few. However, who knows where God will lead next. It might be something that never crossed our minds.

Por favor nos mantenha em suas orações.
Please keep us in your prayers.

And do not forget to pray for 2 particular people whom the Lord has done work in here: Mr. Ishikawa, and Mr. Katae. Pray that the Lord will grow the seeds of His word in their hearts and bear much fruit in them for the Kingdom. Pray also that they will be protected from the enemy, and that God will increase them in faith, love, and understanding.

May God bless all of you and keep you in His peace, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Dia 24: Descreva a dinâmica da sua família durante a sua infância e agora | Describe your family dynamic from your childhood vs. your family dynamic now.

Quando eu era criança, era praticamente assim. O pai falou, é lei.
When I was a child, it was like that. Daddy said, it's the law.
I think it's funny, because when I was stubborn and annoying and I didn't want to do what my mom told me to, her threatening was "Do I need to tell your dad?", then I was so afraid of him that I'd obey her. Nowadays, I see my dad as that 'melted butter', that will only fight with me if I really do something ugly...

Also, nowadays I admire my parents more and I recognize the good job they did on raising me and my brother. When I was little, it was hard to understand their choices, but now I see that all of that helped to mold my character.

Eu e o Seiti brigávamos pra caramba, ele adorava me provocar. Até o dia que ele cresceu e me deixou em paz :P
Me and Seiti used to fight a lot, he loved to tease me. Until the day he grew up and left me in peace :P

I don't know what else to write here, because I wrote a lot about my family on the previous posts :) hihihi so go take a look on the older posts then!

Dia 23: Liste os seus 3 hobbies preferidos e porquê você os ama | List your top 3 hobbies and why you love them.

ARTESANATO | CRAFTS

I've always enjoyed making homemade things, since I was little... and I had several phases: jewelry, crochet, knitting (that I no longer remember), scrapbooking, sewing, hair flowers, quilt, nail loom... Ih... and it's no coincidence, because in my family, everyone does some sort of craft.
I always want to learn new things, I think crafts have a lot of value and I always seek to improve, to make more 'professional' things and also to expand my knowledge in the area. :)

FOTOGRAFIA | PHOTOGRAPHY
I like to photograph a lot. I even did a professional course and other ones about photography. I like to take pictures of people, mostly, but I also like to photograph beautiful sceneries. I think it's a great way to express myself and to keep moments.

PASSEAR | WANDER AROUND
I'm kinda mad they don't have this word "passear" in english. Anyways, I'll try to explain.
I don't even know if that's considered a hobby, but I really didn't know what to write (again...). I like a lot to wander around, walk in the mall, in the park, go have ice cream, visit museums, walk around! Is there anything better than this?

It's almost Thanksgiving in the States, but here in Japan we already celebrated a little bit of this wonderful holiday!

2013 was for sure the hardest year of my life, and I admit that sometimes it was hard to find reasons to be thankful. But the Bible tells us to be thankful in everything....

dando graças constantemente a Deus Pai por todas as coisas, em nome de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo {Efésios 5:20}
giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, {Ephesians 5:20}
Dediquem-se à oração, estejam alerta e sejam agradecidos. {Colossenses 4:2}
Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving. {Colossians 4:2}
Dêem graças em todas as circunstâncias, pois esta é a vontade de Deus para vocês em Cristo Jesus. {1 Tessalonicenses 5:18}
give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. {1 Thessalonians 5:18}
Não andem ansiosos por coisa alguma, mas em tudo, pela oração e súplicas, e com ação de graças, apresentem seus pedidos a Deus. {Filipenses 4:6}
do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. {Ephesians 4:6}

Because of that, I came here to make a lil thankfulness list, for this year and the things that happened this year.
- I am thankful for my husband Jesse, because without him I'd given up Japan and mission in the very start, in January. I'm thankful for all the times he took care of me, let me cry on his shoulders, hugged me, made some teat when I wasn't feeling well, for all the laugh, the chocolates. Seriously, I married well.
- I am thankful for my parents, for the support they gave us in this adventure and because they were always willing to help us in anything we needed.
- I am thankful, because even though I am so far away from my family, God make our homesick smaller, by allowing me to meet Aunt Miyuki and Uncle Mahomed, Aunt Nilce, Denise and Sarinhah. :)
- I am thankful for Jesse's dad, who helped us much beyond his monthly support. I am also thankful that he and Cayla visited us in May.
- I am thankful for the internet, that helped us not to feel thaaat far away.
- I am thankful for the people whom we met here in Japan and who helped us a lot in the process of moving and adaptation in this country so different from ours.
- I am thankful that the food in Japan is yummy, for the security in this country, for the tea, for the Japanese peach, for Hanamasa (where we buy food a little cheaper), for the generosity of the Japanese people.
- I am thankful for the lives of Ishikawa and Katae, who gave us hope that YES, Japanese people can receive Jesus.
- I am thankful to God for this year, because even though it was hard and full of tests, made me grow a lot! And I am thankful to God because he was the one who helped me to go through all these things :)

What about you? What are your reasons to be thankful this season?

Dia 22: Aonde você se vê em 5 anos? 10 anos? 15 anos? | Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years? 15 years?

Aw... that's a question that can make me start thinking and not want to stop anymore...

Em 5 anos. 2018. 27 anos.
In 5 years. 2018. 27 years old.
Nossa, que velha. Hahaha
WOW, how old! hahah
I had a goal for myself, that I forgot now, but it was something like "have visited 15 different countries" (6 to go). But thinking straight, maybe this goal was set for 2013... anyways... when I turn 27, I hope to have visited more then 15 different countries...
It is very easy to imagine the possibilities for these 5 next years but it is really hard to choose only one plan. Probably I will have 1 or 2 Applegate Little Ones running around the house, thought I have no idea on where this house will be. Who knows, I may be graduated till there and be a journalist?

Ok.
Ok. I really don't know. I like to plan, but 5 years is a lot of time to think! I don't know.

Em 10 anos. 2023. 32 anos.
In 10 years. 2023. 32 years old.
Until there, I hope to have finished the production of Little Applegates. I want to be a great wife and mom (and aunt). I hope Atlético will have as many titles as Inter had in their centenary, because I bet that it would with Rebs (and Atletico's Centenary is in 2024). I didn't like this question. It is really hard! But maybe I will have visited like 30 different countries?

Em 15 anos. 2028. 37 anos.
In 15 years. 2028. 37 years old.
Eu quero fazer a diferença!
Guys, I will be almost 40! I have no idea, but until then, I hope to be an influential woman in the Kingdom of God. I want to make the difference! And I want to keep 'missioning' around, I don't want maternity neither age to stop me.

UHU!
CONCLUSION -  This was a really hard question, because even though I love to dream, I leave things in the hands of God. I kinda know what's gonna happen until March next year, but and after? I have no idea! It may be that my plans will completely change! Anyways, 5, 10 and 15 years is a long time to think ahead and God likes to reveal things slowly, so we learn how to trust Him. And I choose to trust in the one that knows my whole future. What I wrote here is just an idea, maybe very foreseeable, but seriously, I know that my future will go beyond this little draft that I wrote here! HUHH!

| A lesson for life

Here's a post that might offend you, but before you complain, remember that Jesus died for people and not for animals.

When my aunt got married, in 2007, her and her fiance had the whole house, so, instead of a wedding gift, they asked the guests to donate to a institution and they recommended two places: the Paraná's Blind People Institution and another organization that helped animals.

I was very quick to give my opinion and told my dad that he had to help the animals! But then he said something that kinda hurt, but after I thought a little, I saw that he was wrong. He said something like: "Erika, do you think the animals are more important than the PEOPLE that Jesus created?"

Today I saw that it was a lesson for life. I learned, at that moment, that the human beings are more important, even if they don't deserve it. And as I wandered around the world, when I saw the prostitution and poverty in the Philippines, the depression in Japan, the abortion in the United States, the drug problem in Belize, I realized that there's nothing more important than the human being. We are the crown of creation.

There's people who treat animals like people and treat the people like animals. What do you gain by fighting against animal testing (which I am absolutely against!) and not caring about the homeless there in the street? Seriously!

Dia 21: 5 coisas que estão na sua cabeça | 5 things on your mind.

1- Brasil - o que eu vou fazer e comer | Brazil - what I will do and eat
Less than a month till I go to Brazil and I'm very excited about all the things I will eat and do. I am anxious to meet my family and friends and see the places that I love so much. Lately, it's been hard to stop thinking about Brazil...

2- Fazer as malas | Packing
I have lots of things to take to Brazil, so I'm thinking on how I'm gonna do this, what I will put in each suitcase, what goes in the carry on and how I will go under the limit (that is 50lb here in Japan! - by the way, between Brazil and USA, it is 70lb!)

3- É segredo ainda | It's a secret
Well, number three is still a secret (that will be revealed in our next newsletter!), so I can't tell yet, but I tell ya, my head is exploding with so many thoughts, like always!)

4- Uruguai | Uruguay
Well, I tried to convince my parents to take us to Foz do Iguaçu and Rio de Janeiro, but now that the 'travel bug' has bitten my mom, she only wants to go to places that she's never been before... Because of this, the destination chosen is Uruguay, country that I've been before and fell in love! Now I am thinking about all the places that we'll be able to go and, well, i'm not a fatty or anything, but I am thinking about the 'dulce de leche', the uruguayan ham (that is wonderful!)... hehe

5- A outra parte do segredo | The other part of the secret
Awee, if I had been a little late, I could post here what really is on my mind.... but maybe later I can come update this, right?
